JORGE CASTELLANOS

SCULPTOR

Jorge is from the village of Succotz at the foothills of Xunatunich in the Cayo district. He began carving when he was just 8 years old.

When Jorge sees a piece of slate he 'allows the stone to speak to him', making his art even more special. He works with natural stone, leaving the edges raw. There are no two stones or pieces of art alike. He loves his work and sometimes his pieces are so intricate that he spends weeks working on one. After many years of carving, he has stayed true to his style.

Jorge is inspired by the Mayan temples and Mayan Stelaes. He creates replicas from different sites within the Mundo Maya.
